What is an RFP or grant application?

An RFP (Request for Proposal) is an instrument used across varying sectors, including government and nonprofit, to solicit competitive bids for projects or purchasing solutions. When it comes to grant funding, an RFP or grant application is a formal document issued by an organization seeking proposals from qualified individuals, organizations, or entities for a specific project, program, or funding opportunity. It outlines requirements, objectives, criteria, and submission instructions an applicant must follow to apply for grant funding. Applicants must submit a detailed plan (a grant proposal) in response to these guidelines to request the available funding. Grant proposals explain the needs, methodology, budget, and the applicant’s qualifications to properly use grant funds in accordance with the RFP guidelines.
